Initial situation
NZ Nüesch Zhang Development was invited to create and structure the next 200 km2 of urban development of Qingdao. The task was to integrate the historical downtown, built by the Germans with a famous national park. The game changing influence of the new high speed train station and the new airport needed adaptions in the sharing of work and living as well as how education should be integrated into the society. The proposed concept consists of three new downtown areas, an airport city, the set up of two subway lines plus a typical layout of its stations, a regional leisure and vacation resort in the national park and an overall network of nature-river areas with the new city.
